SUMMER!!! Who doesn't love this time of year?! I mean, besides the BBQ's, bonfires, and beaches, one of the best parts of summer is the slow, laid-back vibe that comes with schools being out and a dwindled down rehearsal & performance schedule. Translation: you get a little break from your usual hectic routine for a few precious months. And hopefully you get to take advantage of your open calendar to travel, whether it's to see family or explore the world.
All this unstructured free-time is awesome at first...until you start to panic, that is. After a few days of not following your rigid class schedule while you sit by the pool and read a book, your mental demons start whispering louder and louder:
Watch out, Slacker! Your laziness will cost you all the hard-earned progress you gained during the year!
Nasty demons. But, I hate to admit that they do have a point here. While it is vitally important to give your body and mind a break from the usual stress you inflict on them during your busy season, you don't want to take so much time off that you backslide and dig yourself into a deep hole. When your companies or school start up again in the fall, you will need to be conditioned and ready to go. Otherwise, you'll put yourself at risk for not just the emotional distress of being out of shape but for physical injuries, as well.
So, how do you ensure you don't backslide in your technique but also allow your body the essential recovery time to reboot for next season?
This is where cross-training comes in handy. The whole point behind cross-training is to give your body a break from its usual activity to decrease the stress from repetitive motion while increasing your fitness level with different types of movement and challenges. These slower summer months can be a perfect opportunity to do that. Instead of taking the same ballet classes over and over again, you can give your body a break from the studio for a few weeks (which is what it is most likely craving!) but still level up by shifting your focus to cross-training.
One of my favorite ways to ramp up my fitness during the summer months, especially when traveling a lot, is my KEY TO YOUR CORE workout. It's short & sweet but super intense if done right (it still challenges me even after 13 years of hardcore strength training!). Plus, it requires no equipment! That means it's a perfect solution for a vacation workout, whether you are "stuck" in a hotel or staying with family or friends:
- You don't need a gym.
- You don't need fancy machines.
- You don't need to dedicate a whole afternoon to working out.
- You can get it done in 10-15 minutes and then get back out by the pool feeling like your good deed is done for the day so you can truly relax!
- You get the benefits of a full-body workout while nurturing your mind-body connection to keep things sharp for when you return to dancing.
This workout requires an intense concentration that will have you feeling like you are leveling up from week to week without monopolizing your well-deserved free time.
Because this cross-training component is such a vital part to your dancing and there's no better time than NOW to be doing it, I want to make it easier for you to take advantage of this program.
